Pittsford: Passed away peacefully with family at his side on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at age 78. Winton was born on March 13, 1945, at Edgewood Arsenal, MD to Eliza Crannell Brown and Winton Brown. Winton is survived by his children Catherine Sarigiannis (Demetrius), Winton, Elizabeth (Brian Tulley), and grandchildren Eliza and Kosmo Sarigiannis. He is also survived by siblings Elizabeth Duncan, William (Sarah), Robert and Barbara Evans (Chuck), many nieces and nephews, as well as Nancy Hallowell, his loving partner of nearly 10 years.
Winton grew up in Irondequoit, NY, graduating from Irondequoit High School in 1963. He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, NY where he sang in the youth chorus. Active in the boy scouts, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He earned a BS in Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin and MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Rochester where he met his first wife Kathleen, the mother of his children. The family resided in the town of Brighton, spending summer months at their cabin in Saranac Inn, NY. Winton was an avid private aviator and CFO of the Airdale Flying Club in Leroy, NY (1976-1985). Winton filled a 4-seater Cessna 172 named 27Quebec with his young family at every opportunity. In addition to flights spanning the US, he flew an expedition to the arctic circle (Baffin Isl. Canada) in June 1982. Winton also loved to bicycle, camp, ski and sail his lightning sailboat with his family, being a member of the Pultneyville Yacht club.
Winton was most proud of his contributions to the Eastman Kodak Company, where he solved critical issues in the manufacture of optical media as an applied mathematician from 1967 to 1996. In 1982, Winton would find his life’s greatest passion: measurement of image quality in radiographic media, specifically mammography images. Winton pursued his passion of breast-cancer detection science with Kodak until 1996. He was later granted US patent #6,381,339 “Image System Evaluation Method and Apparatus using Eye Motion Tracking”, and he spent the rest of his life pursuing the development of this technology under his LLC, Bio-Imaging Experiments.
Winton’s ashes will remain in the Third Presbyterian Church columbarium, where his father and mother were laid to rest. A memorial service will be held in the chapel there on Saturday, June 17th at 10AM.
