Beryl lived a full life. She was born in Belfast, Ireland on March 9, 1929 and overcame the odds as a very premature baby. She grew up loving music, playing organ, ballroom dancing and enjoying biking and tennis. She moved to Syracuse, NY when she was 22 years old and soon met her future husband, Jim, as she was walking to church. They married in 1952 and proceeded to have four healthy, rambunctious boys. Beryl had the joy of spending her summers at Thousand Island Park in their summer home until her boys became too involved in sports; she then cheered them on from the sidelines like no other! She loved to garage-sale with her girlfriends and to her family’s delight, made soda bread and pastry pie. Beryl began her running career after she joined the YMCA program when she was 49 years old. She raced for approximately 10 years, winning many trophies and medals. She was privileged to carry the torch into the stadium at the Empire State Games in the mid-1980s. She was a proud member of the Rochester Track Club and still holds a world record. Her sons are proud to say she could run the mile in 5 ½ minutes in her late 50s! Beryl loved spending time with her grandchildren as well as traveling around the US with her husband in their large RV. They settled in Florida until Jim’s death in 2006 when she relocated to be with her family in Fairport to finish out her days.
Beryl leaves behind her children, Howard (Cheryl) Skelton, Daniel (Dee) Skelton, Robert (Beth) Skelton, Gary (Lori) Skelton; 27 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
She grew very deep in her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in the later years of her life and hoped all her friends and family would do the same. She entered heaven’s gate peacefully holding her son's hand. She will be missed but we will see her again as we reach the other side.
Beryl fought the good fight and finished her race, now she has received her crown in glory!
A Memorial Service will be held in her honor at 10 AM on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Perinton Community Church, 636 High Street Extension, Fairport, NY with a light lunch following. All are welcome!
