Obituary for Virginia (Jini) Deal
Born Virginia Louise Ewing in Watchung NJ, she died in Rochester NY at age 93.
Survived by: sister, Eleanor Todd of Sergeantsville NJ; son Peter and Louise Deal of Morgantown WV; daughter, Jennifer and Wes Becker of Rochester NY; grandchildren - Jessica and Patrick Jones of Latrobe PA, Christina and Sam Bennett of Athens GA, Adam Becker of Rochester NY, Samuel Deal of Atlanta GA, Daniel Deal of Morgantown WV, Aaron Becker of Rochester NY; great-grandson Franklin Bennett. Predeceased by parents James Hart Ewing & Edith Case Ewing and brothers William and Oliver Ewing.
Virginia attended elementary school in Watchung, then her family moved to Stanton where she attended 8th grade in a one room schoolhouse. She graduated from Flemington High School in 1947 and started at Muhlenberg Hospital nursing school until realizing that profession was not for her. Instead she worked at Stangl Pottery, Bakelite, and Bird Brothers among other places. She married Walter Emil (Joe) Deal Jr in 1950. They lived in Lebanon NJ for a couple years then moved to a farm in the Arborville Community of Abbeville County SC. She so appreciated the warm welcome from neighbors and made lifelong friends in South Carolina before moving back to NJ in 1957. Upon returning to Hunterdon County, Jini and Joe lived in Frenchtown then settled in a little house on Buffalo Hollow Road in Lebanon Township. They had an antique and used furniture shop, the Snoop Coop, on Route 31. When her children were young she started work at Utility Propane/Amerigas and continued there until retirement. She divorced in 1979 and enjoyed a special relationship with Clem Gizinski in the 1980s.
Virginia’s long life was well lived. She was a good listener and loved spending time with family and friends. Eager to get involved and share her talents, she had a great smile, laugh, and sense of humor. She had keen visual perception - an artist’s eye. Her hobbies were: playing piano and organ; drawing and oil painting; collecting dishes, teapots, antiques, and other things that caught her fancy; finding deals at yard sales, rummage sales, thrift shops, and consignment shops; and after retirement going to Hunterdon County Senior dinners. She treasured her children and grand-children. She got her kids involved in raising chickens and Seeing Eye dogs; swimming lessons and other classes at the Easton YWCA; piano lessons, rifle club, and so much more all while being a full-time working mother. She definitely had her quirks. One of her friends remarked (hopefully lovingly) to her that Jini was the “most discombobulated person” they ever met. She got through all her challenges with God’s help and especially the verse: "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" from Philippians 4:13. She took her children to church and taught them to love God. She attended various churches throughout her life including Watchung Memorial, Stanton Reformed, Greenville Presbyterian in SC, Three Bridges Reformed, and Lower Valley Presbyterian. When visiting her children’s homes she would attend Roman Catholic churches in Atlanta GA and Morgantown WV and New Hope Free Methodist in Rochester NY.
Virginia’s last 5 years were challenging due to vision loss and dementia. Her family is very grateful for the loving care she received at The Linden House from Kate Clancy and friends in the last 16 months of her life. A graveside service will be held at Newell Cemetery in Stanton NJ in Spring/Summer.
