Jim Bliss said goodbye to this world November 8, 2024. He left an unforgettable impression on everyone he met. Professionally, an accomplished fine artist and illustrator, he often collaborated with his wife Maria and brother, Phil. Jim was a remarkable human being with a brilliant, inquisitive mind. Philosopher, artist, environmentalist, writer, entomologist, voracious reader, he constantly coaxed us to question the status quo, and ask ourselves, are we living conscious, or unconscious, lives. His love and knowledge of the natural world knew no bounds and he urged us all to nurture and protect that which brought him so much comfort, joy and healing.
In recent years, Jim dealt with increasing debilitating health challenges. In spite of them, he strove every day to find joy. While he didn’t always succeed, he never stopped trying. The intensity and sense of purpose in which he lived his life is inspiring. He loved, and was loved. His suffering is over. He is at peace and his spirit lives on. As a friend of his said….”I hope those that went before him greet him with love”.
Jim was a prolific writer. This is from an excerpt of one of his many self-made books that he wrote in 2016, when he thought he might not live much longer. Happily, he lived for another 8 years after its writing. “My suggestion to the still living is simply to take notice of the Natural World. Pay close attention to that from which you come…..that of which you are. The sheer depth, richness, and fullness of experience which can be had by doing so, once one has attained the proper eyes, can fully redeem even the most errantly and dismally lived lives, no matter how wretched. For those who may be reading this and know me, do not feel sorrowful for my passing, or for my painful plight, if I somehow manage to survive. I have been the most fortunate of humans. Beauty has been with me ever since I first noticed her. She accompanies me wherever I go. So why be frightened? Why be sad? My last hope is that others may notice her as well, and perhaps one day join me."
Jim is survived by his wife, Maria, stepson, Stefan, brother Phil, and sister, Ann. if you wish to honor Jim’s life with a donation, please give to any organization working to protect the natural world.
