Obituary for Gerald "Jerry" Fingar
Fingar, Gerald (“Jerry”)
Ogden: September 5, 2018 at age 85. Jerry, a long time resident of Chili, New York passed away unexpectedly. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Jerry will be greatly missed. Jerry drove school bus for Gates-Chili Central School District for more than 45 years and also worked at Rochester Products for 30 years as a set up machine operator. In retirement, Jerry’s focus was the care and feeding of his family members, particularly his Skye Terrier companions, Chloe, Frankly and Elsa.
Jerry was a compassionate and caring individual who was the primary caretaker for his wife of nearly 60 years, Joan, when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. This role was consistent with his focus in life which was to provide for and support his family. He was proud of his family’s accomplishments and his role in helping them to achieve their goals.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Jerry was a communications officer who served on the Battleship Missouri; he enjoyed telling people that he was on the ship when the armistice was signed ending hostilities in Korea. Last year, Jerry had the distinct honor and pleasure of participating in Honor Flight Mission 53. He loved seeing the monuments in Washington, D.C. and appreciated the efficiency and care dispensed by those serving the veterans on that mission.
Jerry cherished his independence and enjoyed visiting with family and friends, whether it be an impromptu road trip to see his siblings in Penn Yan or hanging out with his buddies at the Gates OTB. An avid bowler and golfer in his younger years, Jerry enjoyed watching golf and other sports on television and rooting against the Yankees.
Predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joan, Jerry is survived by his loving daughters Amy (Frank) Adamski, Melissa Fingar, his grandson, Jeffrey Terzo (Maddison Campbell), and his Skye Terriers (Chloe, Frankly, and Elsa).
A gathering to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at Midtown Athletic Club (200 East Highland Drive, Brighton) at 4:00 p.m. on September 23, 2018. Please join us in sharing light refreshments, lots of hot coffee, and your memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Honor Flight of Rochester, Hildebrandt Hospice, or the Monroe Community College Foundation.
