BRIEF STORY OF LOVED ONE: Eunice was born at Strong Memorial Hospital, June 11, 1950, the fourth of five daughters born to Randall Lee Brooks and Marion Jane Brooks (Owens). Eunice was a bright, precocious and energetic child. She excelled in her studies, attending Rochester Public School #3 and graduated the Valedictorian of the first graduating class of Rochester Junior Academy of the Jefferson Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church here in Rochester, NY. She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1967 and continued her studies on a 4-year scholarship to SUNY Brockport. She also attended Potsdam and Geneseo Universities, graduated with a degree in education. She taught elementary school in Rochester for some years. She subsequently pursued a career in mental health. She worked for and retired from the Rochester Psychiatric Hospital in 1996.
Eunice was gifted with a love of music and literature. In her early years she sang with her four sisters as “The Brooks Sisters,” an acapella group. She later sang with a group named “Up With The People.” Eunice was known for her beautiful prose and writings to friends and loved ones and for her gracious, charming ways and beautiful smile.
Eunice was a known beauty, the proof of which was confirmed when she was elected the second runner-up in the 1967 Monroe Country Harvest Queen Competition.
Around 1995, she met the love of her life, James Wickes Eckberg. From their marriage in 1998, until his untimely death in 2017, they were inseparable. They shared many interests. They traveled together. They worshipped together at the First Universalist Church in Rochester, NY. They were active in The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) and were pioneers of several new support groups in that organization.
Surviving and Predeceased Relatives - She is survived by: three siblings: Marion F. Brooks, Elizabeth V. Brooks Cooper and Yolonda Isabel Brooks Canty and predeceased by one sister, Daytha Natasha Brooks Lee; six nieces and nephews: Masakela Cooper, DeLeon McKee, Rachel Cooper, Mianika K. Brooks-Lee Woodson, Aaron R. McKee and Kofi O. N. Brooks; eleven great nieces and nephews: Teja Reeves McKee, Betty Jean Noble, Sarah Cooper, Darrien Woodson, Isaiah McKee, Aniya Cooper, Josiah Cooper-Hicks, Joshua McKee, Daniel Cooper-Hicks, Madison McKee and Caleb Spears; one God-daughter: Natalie Lewis; one sister in-law: Kristin Eckberg Reif and her family and one brother-in-law: Eric Eckberg and his family. She also leaves behind a host of other family members and friends.
Service Details: Her Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the First Universalist Church located at 150 S. Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY, 14604, with a reception to follow thereafter.
Flowers can be donated directly to the church no sooner than Friday, May 17, 2019 between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
